Health in Motion is Blue Marble's physical therapy patient app. It allows patients to perform daily exercises, lessons, and tests, assigned by their clinician. The app also has reminders for patients to take their medications, surveys to assess their health on a given day, diary entries and goal setting. The app contains over 100 exercises, exercise customization, and exercise routine creation options. Patients perform these exercises alongside a 3D avatar that demos the exercises for them.

When I joined the company the Health in Motion app was in the process of being transitioned from it's original conception as a Microsoft Kinect game into a modern mobile and desktop application for patient rehabilitation. The company worked for the most part based on funding from grants from healthcare organizations, such as the National Institutes of Health, for creating health modules, exercises, and lesson content for different conditions such as a COPD, Asthma, Total Knee Replacement rehabilitation, and more.

UI/UX Design Challenges

  • Working on an existing legacy product with a long history and a very complex data collection framework on the back end.

  • Slowly transitioning existing components to a new modern and mobile-friendly UI framework.

  • Creating UX schema that would continue to be accessible for older demographics.

  • Creating and maintaining modular systems that would hold up to the continued implementation of new app features and content.

Solutions:

The Daily Tasks Menu

The backbone of the Health in Motion app, the daily tasks menu is the starting hub for Health in Motion patient experience.

  • Contains a list of all the tasks that the patient needs to do that day.

  • Designed such that new types of tasks could be implemented easily on the backend,

  • Quick "one stop shop" for a patient who wants to quickly see what they need to do and start their tasks for the day.

  • Each individual task component could be implemented modularly without disrupting the broader framework of the Health in Motion menu architecture.

Exercise Routine Design Pattern

Exercise routines were designed to be as simple as possible for users.

  • 5 buttons onscreen maximum

  • Clear button to progress on the bottom right.

  • Large timers and UI elements to show key information for current exercise.

  • Settings for minimal user interaction so that patients could focus on safely exercising. For example, autoplay mode.
